Uluwatu Kecak Dance Bali is usually held every evening exactly at 18.00 o’clock at an open stage near the temple.

The stage is about 1.400 audience capacity. Before watching it, every audience will be required to buy a ticket (IDR 100.000) at locket counter which is opened start from 17.00.

Kecak dance is staged in a group (about 70 dancers) that consist of main characters, namely:

  • Rama (a prince of Ayodhya)
  • Sita (Rama’s Wife)
  • Laksamana (Rama’s young brother)
  • Jatayu (Rama’s friend who has a form of Garuda Bird).
  • Hanuman (a commander of the monkey troopers).
  • Rahwana (an giant at Alengka Pura)

Others dancer will be a group that wear a cloths with black and white pattern. They will sit in an circle and shout Cak.. Cak..cak! as vocal to accompany during the dance.

The Synopsis of Kecak Dance

Kecak dance narrates about Ramayana’s story, the heroism of Prince Rama with the wanara (the monkey troopers) to salvage Princess Sita, his wife whom is kidnapped by Rahwana (a Giant Evil King).

There are 4 scenes of dance, among others are:

Scene I: Rama and Laksamana leave Sita Alone

The Rama, Dewi Sita, and Laksmana characters enter the stage, then the Golden Deer (Marica incarnation) appears.

Because of the beauty of the deer, Sita asks to Rama to arrest it. Rama undertakes and leaves Sita by telling Laksmana to look after his wife.

A few moments later, that sounds a screams for help, Sita feels panicked and think it came from the Rama. Then, she asked to Laksamana for overtaking Rama.

However, Laksamana refuse it and will not leave Dewi Sita alone as Rama’s order.

Because he was accused of taking advantage of the death of his brother Sri Rama, Laksamana become angry and provoked too, eventually leaving Dewi Sita alone.

Scene II: Sita is Kidnapped by Rahwana

Dewi Sita, who is left alone, made a good opportunity for Rahwana to kidnap her. Then, Rahwana appears but fails to kidnap Sita.

Next, Rahwana change his form to become a Bhagavan (wise old man) who fell thirst and asked a glass of water to Sita.

After that, Bhagawan (Rahwana) kidnap Sita secretly then leave the place.

On the way, Sita scream for help. The scream is heard by Jatayu, a Rama friend who has a form of Garuda birds.

Jatayu come and help Sita then fight against Rahwana. But, he lost and his wings cut down by Rahwana.

Scene III: The Hanuman Infiltrates into Alengka Pura

Rama and Laksmana who are lost in a forest, know that Sita who was kidnapped and taken away by Rahwana to Alengka Pura (Rahwana’s castle).

Then, Rama ask for help to Hanuman (a commander of monkey troopers) to bring the ring to Alengka Pura and give to Sita.

Scene IV: the Hanuman Ruins the Castle

Hanuman succeeds to infiltrate into Rahwana’s castle and see Sita who is lamenting her fate. Then, he hands over the ring. Sita leave the flowers to Rama to immediately release her.

Hanuman left Sita, while ransacking the Alengka Pura so that it was in ruins. The giants (guard of castle) know and catch him.

Hanuman is arrested and burned, but he was able to escape and be free from death because of his magic.
